Quick tutorial: How to install Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8

Installing high quality Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8 is easy and can be done in seconds, once you have downloaded the compressed folder containing the brush you need.

Finding free Photoshop brushes

First, locate a safe place to download Photoshop brushes on the web. Here, I’m going for the Free Calligraphic Ornament Brushes available on Brusheezy.com.

Brushes usually come in compressed zipped folders, so go ahead and save the .zip file. You can decide to extract the whole folder, but it is not mandatory.

Installing Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8

Step 1

Go to your local drive (or the C: hard disk drive), and head over to Program Files > GIMP 2 > share > gimp > 2.0 > brushes. If you look back into the ZIP file you just downloaded, you can see that it contains a file with the .abr extension.

The ABR file is what you need to install in GIMP's brush folder.

Step 2

Grab that ABR file and place it into the brushes folder you previously accessed under Program Files. You can do that by copying and pasting the ABR file if you’ve extracted the files from your compressed folder. Another option is to simply drag and drop the ABR file in its new destination.

The installed Photoshop brushes are in fact ABR files dropped in GIMP's brush folder.

Step 3

Click Continue on the alert box.

An alert box appearing to ask Admin privileges before installing the Photoshop brushes in GIMP's folder.
