Installing high quality Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8 is easy and can be done in seconds, once you have downloaded the compressed folder containing the brush you need.
Finding free Photoshop brushes
First, locate a safe place to download Photoshop brushes on the web. Here, I’m going for the Free Calligraphic Ornament Brushes available on Brusheezy.com.
Brushes usually come in compressed zipped folders, so go ahead and save the .zip file. You can decide to extract the whole folder, but it is not mandatory.
Installing Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8
Go to your local drive (or the C: hard disk drive), and head over to Program Files > GIMP 2 > share > gimp > 2.0 > brushes. If you look back into the ZIP file you just downloaded, you can see that it contains a file with the .abr extension.
Grab that ABR file and place it into the brushes folder you previously accessed under Program Files. You can do that by copying and pasting the ABR file if you’ve extracted the files from your compressed folder. Another option is to simply drag and drop the ABR file in its new destination.
Click Continue on the alert box.
Note: You need Administrator privileges for this step, so make sure you are logged on your computer as an Administrator.
Open your GIMP 2.8 application on your computer and open the Brushes dialog. To do that, hit Shift+Ctrl+B or go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Brushes. Your new brushes should be visible and ready to use!
If you had GIMP opened already, your newly-installed brushes may not show up automatically. To see them, click the Refresh icon on the bottom right of the Brushes dialog.
And that’s it!
There you have it, you now know how to install Photoshop brushes in GIMP 2.8 without hassle. The next time you find a Photoshop brush that you like, follow the steps from this GIMP tutorial and unleash your creativity with new styles!
